How Cloud Computing Has Cut Through The Hype And Transformed Business

16 Aug 2016

The cloud has gone from a metereological term to a mainstream technological one in less than 10 years. Cloud computing has enabled businesses to upfront infrastructure costs and streamline key business functions like marketing, purchasing and supply chain management. A report from SAP & Oxford Economics show that this technology has had a transformative impact on their business.

In the visualisation above you see the Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies. The model helps you discern the hype from what's commercially viable. Furthermore, the Gartner Hype Cycle gives a view of how a technology, in this case cloud computing, will evolve over time. As you can see in the model above, it has passed the phases innnovation trigger, peak of inflated expectations and trough of disillusionment. This means that high expectations and enthusiasm about this technology have evolved into tangible and real benefits for businesses.

A survey from SAP & Oxford Economics with 200 executives from around the world report that 31% of companies say cloud has had a transformative impact on business performance. Moreover, the survey shows that more than two-thirds (69%) of businesses expect to make moderate-to-heavy cloud investments over the next three years.
