The Future Of Food Shopping & Digital Disintermediation

03 Dec 2015

Food delivery startups like Seamless, Munchery, Instacart and FreshDirect have recognized that today's food shoppers prioritize convenience, sustainability and a seamless shopping experience. The number of farmers markets in USA have increased with 364% the last 20 years as a result of a growing consumer demand for local, fresh and organic foods. Furthermore people are increasingly buying food on-demand and online instead of going to the supermarket, and according to a study by Nielsen, more than 50% of global consumers are inclined to shop groceries online.

The common thread among a lot of digital startups is that they are cutting out the middle man in the supply chain, and this is exactly what the french online food co-op La Ruche Qui Dit Oui (they are also known as Food Assembly in the UK) are doing by connecting consumers with producers.

La Ruche qui dit Oui's business model relies on grass-root social networking. This is how it works:

  • First you have to find the closest assembly to where you live.
  • Secondly you must become a member of that community and then you can explore which kind of foods that are available in your area and order online.
  • And finally the members collect the food at a local venue where the assembly takes place.

The online food co-op is driving the growth of local food consumption by providing a platform, brand and a network to farmers and consumers. This have proven to be a very successful business model. Last year they launched in U.K., Germany, Spain and Italy.

The growth of food startups is shaping the future of food shopping in many ways. These trends are ofcourse beneficial for us consumers and can also be favourable for producers and growers, however the intermediares may suffer as they are being cut out of the supply chain. During the last 8 years we have seen how disruptive startups have created digital disintermediation in a wide range of industries - even the make up industry could potentially be disintermediated.

Which industry do you think will be next?
